This Evokes an Undiscovered World

It's virtually impossible for the outsider to understand how routine audible or visual hallucinations as part of an ongoing neurological or metabolic condition can reshape someone's perspective on the world, let alone the day-to-day routine... or struggle. Certainly, it is nowhere near as peaceful as a traditional ambient techno song as this, although the occasional use of static certainly demonstrates how this psychiatric condition disrupts daily life. The abrupt end, mirroring the beginning, is very much how one enters into the condition, and only exits from it upon dying.

It's a hard bargain that's being delivered here, but one thing is certain: a schizophrenic (someone with a splintered mind) has an easier time connecting with the world... because it never works in the other direction. The world could care less if you can perceive reality correctly or not.

Oh, and I've been listening to this track loop for a while. It's soothing... relatively speaking, of course. It's certainly more mellow than Sephora's typical industrial faire, and has enough of a composition and set of transitions to call it an ambient sonata of sorts... a traditional A part, then B part, and then A again.

There's a moment that sounds somewhat like heavy breathing and I immediately thought about the likelihood of forming a solid relationship with someone who has a painful illness as this. Unlike cancer or other terminal illnesses, the behavior of the typical sufferer of schizophrenia won't harbor anybody's sympathies. It is unrealistic to suggest that schizophrenics are anymore violent than typical citizens, although one could say the frustration that comes out of being stigmatized by the regular population will serve to exacerbate the subtle symptoms of disenchantment and isolation. In other words, the schizophrenic mind is a locked room and nobody is inclined to find a key with which to enter.

I normally wouldn't express all my thoughts on a subject unless I had some experience on the subject. I work with people who have a psychiatric affliction--typically the "Big Three" of major depression, schizophrenia, and manic depression--and understand second-hand the plight of someone with a "rigged mind". It's hard to escape the loneliness of such diseases. Sometimes I feel jealous of cancer patients, since there's a sense of immediacy behind ensuring their continuing survival; the resources poured into cancer research far exceeds their ability to correctly treat, reverse, or possibly cure the affliction itself. Meanwhile, people die of all kinds of problems other than psychiatric disorders, such as diabetes, heart failure, lung cancer, and many other problems that typically come right back to this disorder, how it is treated (some medicines' side effects are utterly shocking), or the victim's behavior as a reaction to the illness' symptoms. In short, it is not quite the disorder that makes the afflicted person lonely, but rather the distorted perceptions and priorities of the world around them. How the schizophrenic perceives the world might actually be important to examine in further detail.

Having expelled the contents of my chest long enough, I must say this song does have an unusual effect on the psyche, if listened to long enough. Sephora is keen to suggest how loneliness is more or less the ongoing reality for those who suffer this illness. She is also keen with her musical talent, and it is strongly suggested that she continue to entertain us with her (hopefully) growing and evolving catalog.

Soundtrack to the Dehumanization of Great Old Ones

This one brings up just one question: Why can't we hear more from this rising talent this year?

With a cinema-centric progression, with the intro and the forboding guitar, this hard industrial horror song should be able to inspire a whole wad of "Noir" cartoons in the portal. It's okay without vocals, although incorporating them would definitely max it out, so long as they are thematically consistent.

Sephora ought to consider regular collaboration with other musicians here. I'd recommend Bad-Man Incorporated or SpeedMetalMessiah (both of which have collaborated with a regular techno musician) or GoreBastard, since his material is unequivocably harsh as well. I wouldn't try ParagonX9, not because she's virtually immortal (so-called), but because your styles would clash. winKoneR might be a better fit, and for anyone who likes winKoneR, Sephora is a definite pick (and vice versa!).

If there was a downside to this song, there are moments where it sounds too mechanical, or repetitive. It is a step up from Sephora's previous work though, and serves well as the barometer with which to judge future tracks.

Sephora is an excellent musician to hang with if you're secretly awaiting the coming of a couple of Great Old Ones, or just wondering who could stand tall next to Trent Reznor. Highly recommended.

Clouds Move Fast Underneath the Full Moon...

Who fucking zero-bombed this one?

If we got a list of names, NG would be shut down by the end of the week after what we would perpetrate!

Such is the love I have for this song. There are flaws, but I just brought this to 3.38, a 0.57 increase from before I voted 5.

I've always considered heavy metal to be too loud; some of the best stuff came from the slow, creeping tunes and psychedelic aspect of the form. Yes, there are psychedelic elements, as well as hard blues. It's a style that clutches and masters the irreverence of grim tidings, hence its subject matter.

As with any genre, Heavy Metal was derived from the classics. Thanks for sharing your vision (or sound) with the rest of us.

Next Installment: Whores of Euphrates! (or not...)

A bit soft on the ears and it could use some equalizing to draw out the flavor of the psychedelia, but this is a creepy, crawly creature of awesome. In its present form alone, it could serve as background music for a video game. Slick work, buddy!

Xth responds:

Uhmm, good idea actually. I'll def make a "sequel".
I thought psychedelia was a good thing! But anyways, glad you liked it. Thanks for the review/score!!!

Driven to Try Something Different (You Rock!)

I don't understand how you don't care much for this one... it sounds just as well or even better than some of the tracks you've recently released. Those tracks lack the polish and the bass and drum work that this one happens to have. Actually, this one is pretty damn cool.

The fact that I often review the stuff that I also DOWNLOAD should give you some smile on your face. I might download without giving a reason to the author, but for some guys who've been ticking for a long time, I have to.

By the way... on your "Pezuzu" submission, who performed vocals? Just curious (and if the answer is terribly obvious, then I'm also retarded).

Anyway, this track tries different things, and that's the sign of a competent musician. I ain't slinging shit at Xeno for trying Ska or Funk genres because I'm not so shallow as to think that people should stick to just one thing. It's the way I play Devil's Advocate for Metallica.

Now, if you ever took up a different position in a band... somewhere other than killer leads... then I wouldn't hold it against you. However, lead guitar is your strength, especially your technically proficient and wild-on-amphetamines solos. The passion and latin vibe pulsing through each note doesn't kill us, either! If you left to do rhythm or bass, or drums (positions I would fill, should I take up music late in life), then I wouldn't hold you to anything, or criticize you. You're developing as a musician, and that's it.

The O Voters are the kind of people who bash Metallica's Load albums. They think you should stick to lead guitar, and Metallica to straight-up thrash (something they happened to pioneer). But if musicians, artists, and especially doctors didn't bother to try out new things and learn and stay adaptable and current, then their skills would wane and become forgotten, hackneyed, or worse, lives could be lost (in the case of doctors). It's important that you try things out or find new ways to mess around.

Post-Script: This song is awesome!

Metaljonus responds:

Holy crap that is alot to read lol. I appreciate the long ass review. It would have been better on one of my serious track hehe jk. This track is more of an idea than a song. Yeah its like 3 min long but I know I could add so much more to it. And will probably do so here in a month or so. I kind of wanna take my time with the track to really write out an epic ass song lol. I am defentily growing as a musician, trying new things/ideas out every other day is pretty damn fun I must say. Why stick to one genre when there are many others to explore! That's how feel a musician lately.

Zero voters can die, I can never really understand why people do that because of music. Music is'nt a competition. Its about the freedom to express oneself in a certain genre or many different genres. Since music so damn express and progresses everyday with new and exciting or not so exciting ideas, it is still music non the less.

About "Pezuzu" one of my good friends and ex singer sung that track. With the help of the other guitarist at the time Shane doing the growls. Good song I miss playing it. But hey what can you do? Thanks for the in depth review.

Excellent

"Crushing Impact of a Thousand Tons" is a track that translates well into a video game, from it's intro sound effect to everything beyond. Also, this track is better mastered; Crushing can get a makeover from five obsessive-compulsive grind-core veterans.

This is pretty good as a VG track--better than Systematic Dismemberment, in fact--and will be best served through a hardcore action game.

O.O

Actually, I could split it at 1:10 into two songs. Actually, I could split it into multiple tracks. Fuck it. I can turn it into a series of tracks and program a set of AS instances so that one track plays during one situation during the game, and another for another situation, etc.

It's insanely harsh, though. This song requires a contextually consistent game to flow with it. I'm not sure if I have can devise something that could go with this, although I am not willing to give up. Even a small piece of this can kick someone's ass, and that's saying a lot.

This is a Cock Rider song

Put it in your joke tune account, dumb-ass. It'll still get a fucking ten out of me, but then I'd know it's just another chainsaw-the-dark-matter-with-a-herri ng song.

Voted Five and laughed, because you and I need both.

GoreBastard responds:

Hahaha, thanks man. I was actually thinking about putting it in CR, but decided to put it here instead because more people would listen to it if they saw GoreBastard.

Thanks for the words mate!!

WHERE THE FUCK WERE YOU? FUCKER! (Nice Track)

You're butt-fucking undead for the love of God, Gore! One would think that eating, drinking, and shitting other people's brains would give you some cool ideas with which to flesh out a metal track once in a while!

Sorry for the rant there, buddy... man, even you're around again. I have to rethink what I've been doing for the past month (nothing--depression, boredom, agony... long story, no time to tell) because now YOU'RE BACK!

And your skill hasn't waned!

It's cool to know that you can just "whip" something together and still come off as competent, because you are. Whipping stuff up was your forte in the day. These days, it hasn't changed. It's also good to know you're still undead enough to whip this stuff out to begin with. It's even better to know that the music still rocks.

Well, my heart rate is 195 over something-or-other and I feel spiffy enough to tear my pet chimera in half lengthwise from the head down to the balls. Such is the wonderful feeling I get whenever I listen to GoreBastard's 100% pure death-fucking-metal. I hope that we here at Newgrounds enjoy how he pisses blood upon the weak, the still-living, and oh yeah, those O Voters... definitely the O voters... with each and every bit of guitar mayhem that he can spread!

GWAAARGH! GWAAAAAARGH! ...AND KITTEEEENNNNNSS!

(Don't ask).

U N S E T T L I N G

Finally, an ambient track (first half), and a gritty ambient electronic/electric on the second half. This is definitely a game-worthy track. The whole company of jerks ought to be proud.

I gotta keep going, too, if I want my games to give this music the justice it deserves.

Bad-Man-Incorporated responds:

Thanks muchly man.

When one is drained of all humor, anything beautiful is met with one of two things: disdainful worry or worrisome disdain. Anything ugly is met with violence. Flash is complex and beautiful, not a toy. Keep that in mind... or things get ugly real quick.
